There are all kinds of bikes on the market today. They have the ability to get you from point “A” to point “B” however most people use them simply to get exercise. A unique few, use their bike to get to and from work. Most people don’t bike to work unless they have to. After all, who wants to show up to work as a sweaty mess? In today’s world, you can have the best of both worlds. You can purchase an electric bike. This is a great solution for those that don’t drive and others who simply can’t afford to have a car in their city. One of the most important questions people ask when considering an electric bike is, “are electric bikes fast?”

Choosing the Right Electric Bike

They are certainly not indie race cars, but they do get you to your destination faster than a bike. If you are in the market for an electric bike there are many things to consider besides how fast it goes, but that remains the number one question. There are many makes and models, but before you purchase one it is best to check with the rules and regulations of the city you live in to make sure they are street legal. The last thing you want to do is make an investment in something you will not be able to use. Don’t let it get you down because your city might allow electric bikes. If they don’t it is usually because they do have an element of danger about them.

Depending on which one you buy they can reach different speeds and different price levels. The price range is anywhere from $2,000 all the way up to $88,000. These, of course, are for manufactured models. If you were to make one on your own it would be less expensive, but also less likely to be street legal. It is a personal choice, but making your own could be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. In addition, to the price, speed is the next concern. Electric bikes can be fast.

Conclusion

As with anything, you get what you pay for, but this statement is not exactly true. The speed of electric bikes ranges from 30 mph and under, all the way up to 88 mph. The speed doesn’t always correlate with the price. Meaning that a well-built model of a lesser speed might be more expensive than a faster one. It all depends on the brand and features you are looking for. Riding an electric bike much above 50 mph can be shaky at best. It’s not a motorcycle although they have made some of the newer models to look like one. Another issue is that the speed is often estimated, so it might not get up as high as the company claims.

Whatever option you decide to purchase you can be certain that it will get you where you need to go. It will be a smaller carbon footprint than a car and you might get some exercise depending on the model. Check the internet for the purpose of comparison shopping and always take a test drive before buying to make sure it is right for you. Lastly, enjoy your new toy.
